Ameera Khan, LPC was one of our wonderful child therapists who worked with us for a handful of years. She was a total rock star for us during the Covid quarantines as she came up with about a million ideas of how we could do therapy on line with kids while still making it fun and engaging. What a life saver!! During this time, she wrote a blog for the Tree House. I am so sad to tell you that shortly after the quarantine in March of 2022, Ameera passed away from metastatic breast cancer at a very young age. She was honestly such a beautiful person both inside and out and we all grieved the loss of our friend and colleague. We would like to revive and highlight her blog at this time. I took the liberty of updating it to add current life events instead of life around Covid. I don't think she would mind at all! Her thoughts and suggestions for parents are still right on and valid today.
Although the weather is getting colder, and fall is in full swing, there are still many things to look forward to for you and your child. Halloween is a great chance for families to get creative and celebrate in fun, new or in traditional ways together.
After Halloween, there are still the rest of the holidays to look forward to and many ways to honor and celebrate your favorite holidays with your friends and families. It wasn't too long ago with the Covid quarantine that we had to celebrate holidays on our own! If there is anything I have learned from that time is not to take the holiday season and being able to visit with your loved ones for granted.
A fun activity for the fall is to assess your child's goals by making a tree with changing leaves. Have your child draw a tree. On the tree have them draw several leaves of different colors. Have each color represent a goal achieved, and goal they would like to achieve. This will give you an opportunity to talk with your child about setting goals, and how to achieve them.
Football feelings- in honor of football season, have your child dance to their favorite "feelings songs" when the song is paused have them do a touchdown dance to represent a feeling, and try to guess which feeling that is. Take turns, and talk about when you might see/feel these feelings. This will open up a dialogue on feelings and when they are appropriate.
Change is tough for anyone to go through. Consider having your child join one of our fun groups to keep them busy, having fun and being engaged with other kids in person. We have a range of groups for different ages/genders/interests. Joining these groups will allow your child to interact with other kids, and get a chance to socialize in a productive manner.
Additionally, we do offer individual sessions for you or your child with one of our licensed therapists.
As life seems to get more and more stressful, allow us to help guide your kids through all the challenges. Give us a call and get started in one of our groups or with an individual session. We are here for you! Stay tuned for more tips and ways to help you parent your kids easier for you and your family.
